Blind Flanges
M.S. & S.S. Blind Flange Manufacturer & Supplier — Darukhana, Mumbai · Since 1999
A blind flange is a solid disc with bolt holes and no bore, bolted to a pipe end, nozzle or valve to close it off completely. Because it is bolted and not welded, the end can be opened again — for inspection, for cleaning, for a hydrostatic test, or for the extension somebody will add to the line two years from now. I.S. Engineering Co. cuts and machines blind flanges at Darukhana, Mumbai in mild steel to IS:2062 and in stainless steel SS 304 / 304L / 316 / 316L, from 15mm to 600mm NB, drilled to Table D, E, F or H or to ANSI B16.5 class, with raised face, flat face or RTJ facing. Five sub-types are covered on this page — BLRF, BLFF, RTJ blind, tapped blind and spectacle blind / spade and spacer — plus anything cut to your own drawing.
What Is a Blind Flange?
A blind flange is a solid disc, drilled on the rim and left unbored in the middle, that bolts onto a flanged pipe end, a vessel nozzle or a valve outlet and shuts it completely. Trade names for the same part are blanking flange, blank flange and BL flange. It is the simplest flange we make and the one most often ordered in a hurry, because a line that has to be closed today is usually a line somebody wants opened again later.
What changes between one blind and the next is the facing and the drilling. A raised face blind (BLRF) seats a ring gasket against a raised face flange. A flat face blind (BLFF) takes a full-face gasket against flat face flanges and cast iron equipment. An RTJ blind carries a machined ring groove for a metal ring gasket. A tapped blind gets a boss drilled and threaded for a vent, drain, gauge or thermowell. Line blinds — spectacle blinds and spade-and-spacer sets — are cut to the drilling of the joint they sit in. The drilling itself follows Table D, E, F or H, or an ANSI B16.5 class, and it must match the flange it bolts against.
A blind has no bore to machine and no hub to turn, so we can work to an odd thickness, an odd drilling or a one-off pattern without much fuss. Send the size, the table or class, the facing and the grade, and the part is straightforward to cut.
Blind flange, end cap or line blind?
All three close a pipe, and they are not interchangeable. A blind flange is bolted, so the end can be opened again — specify it where inspection, cleaning, testing or a future extension is likely. An end cap is butt welded and permanent, with no gasket and no bolts to look after. A spectacle blind or spade-and-spacer set sits inside an existing joint so the same joint can be blanked and unblanked repeatedly, which is what you want on an isolation point that gets used every shutdown.

Blind Flange Sub-Categories We Make
We make five blind flange sub-types: BLRF, BLFF, RTJ / RJ blind, tapped or drilled blind, and spectacle blind and spade-and-spacer line blinds. They share the same outside diameter, pitch circle and bolt holes for a given size and table — what separates them is the facing, and whether the disc is plain, tapped or paired. Pick the row that matches the flange you are bolting against, then send us the size, the table or class and the grade.
| Sub-Category | Trade Code | What Is Different | Usually Specified For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blind Raised Face | BLRF | Raised sealing face; the ring gasket sits inside the bolt circle | Process, steam, oil and gas lines — any joint against a raised face flange |
| Blind Flat Face | BLFF | Flat face across the full width; takes a full-face gasket | Water, air and effluent lines, cast iron pumps and valves, lined and GRP equipment |
| RTJ / RJ Blind | RTJ / RJ | Machined ring groove in place of a plain face; metal ring gasket | Higher pressure and temperature duty where a soft gasket is not accepted |
| Tapped / Drilled Blind | BL — Tapped | Threaded or drilled boss through the disc | Vent, drain, pressure gauge, thermowell or sampling point on a closed end |
| Spectacle Blind / Spade & Spacer | Line Blind | Two discs on one web, or a solid plate plus a matching spacer ring | Isolation points blanked and opened every shutdown; permit-to-work isolation |
What Each Blind Sub-Type Is For
BLRF — Blind Raised Face
The default blind. A narrow raised face concentrates the bolt load on the gasket, so a standard ring gasket seals with less torque than a full-face joint needs. Order BLRF whenever the flange it bolts to is raised face — mixing a flat face blind onto a raised face flange leaves the gasket unsupported and it will weep.
BLFF — Blind Flat Face
Flat right across, for a full-face gasket that reaches past the bolt holes. This is the blind for water, air, chilled water and effluent lines, and the one to use against cast iron pump casings, valve bodies and lined or GRP equipment, where a raised face would put a bending load on brittle material.
RTJ / RJ Blind
An octagonal or oval ring groove is machined into the face and a solid metal ring gasket does the sealing. Specified where temperature, pressure or the fluid rules out a soft gasket. The groove finish and the ring number both matter, so quote the ring number (R-__) or send the mating flange drawing with the enquiry.
Tapped / Drilled Blind
A blind with a threaded or drilled boss so the closed end can still be vented, drained, gauged or fitted with a thermowell. Tell us the thread size and type, whether you want it on centre or offset, and whether it is to be plugged on despatch. Common on test ends, dead legs and vessel nozzles kept for future tie-ins.
Spectacle Blind & Spade / Spacer
Line blinds that live inside the joint rather than on the end of it. A spectacle blind joins a solid disc and a bored disc with a web so the fitter slides one across for the other; a spade and spacer set does the same job in two loose pieces on sizes too heavy to swing. Both are cut to the drilling of the flanges they sit between.
To Your Own Drawing
Non-standard outside diameter, an odd pitch circle, extra thickness for a test pressure, a lifting hole, a drilling copied off a sample flange, or a plate blank with no facing at all. A blind has no bore or hub to machine, so one-offs are easy for us. Send a sketch, a photograph or the old flange itself.
Blind Flange Dimension Table — Table E Drilling, 15mm to 600mm NB
The chart below is the Table E drilling we hold as regular stock work, from 15mm to 600mm NB. Outside diameter, pitch circle, bolt count, bolt hole diameter, bolt size and thickness are all listed. There is no bore column, because a blind flange has no bore — the disc is solid. Read the thickness column as the standard thickness for a Table E blind in that size; it matches the corresponding Table E flange.

Table D, F and H, and ANSI class charts
We also make blind flanges to Table D, Table F and Table H drilling, and to ANSI B16.5 class drilling — those charts are sent on request rather than published here. Ask on WhatsApp or email for the table and sizes you need and we will send the sheet. If the blinds are for a hydrostatic test, quote the test pressure as well as the working pressure: the thickness has to suit the test, and we would rather confirm it before cutting than after.
Verify every figure against your own drawing or the flange it will bolt to before you release an order. Drilling must match the mating flange exactly — same table or class, same pitch circle, same hole count. For odd sizes, non-standard thickness, extra lifting holes or a pattern copied off a sample flange, call +91 99220 47887.
Where Blind Flanges Are Used — and Where We Send Them
A blind flange goes wherever a line, a nozzle or a valve outlet has to be shut and might have to be opened again. That covers dead ends left for a future tie-in, sections blanked off for a pressure test, equipment isolated for maintenance, and spare branches on a header that were drilled for expansion nobody has built yet. Below are the jobs our blinds leave the shop for most often, in mild steel and in stainless.
Pipe Ends and Future Tie-Ins
Closing the end of a header, a distribution main or a spare tee branch. The end stays sealed but unbolts in minutes when the line is extended, which is why contractors blank a stub with a blind rather than welding a cap on it.
Hydrostatic and Pneumatic Testing
Blanking a spool or a section so it can be filled and pressure tested before commissioning. Give us the test pressure with the enquiry — the blind and the bolting have to hold the test, which normally runs well above the working pressure of the line.
Maintenance and Permit-to-Work Isolation
Positive isolation of pumps, vessels, heat exchangers and reactors before anyone opens them up. On isolation points used every shutdown, a spectacle blind or a spade-and-spacer set is the better buy, because it can be swung without breaking the pipework.
Refinery, Oil, Gas and Petrochemical
Line blinds, RTJ blinds and tapped blinds on process and utility headers, wellhead and manifold assemblies, and gas distribution work. Facing, ring number and grade all follow the line specification, so send the drawing or the spec sheet with the enquiry.
Water, Sewage, Effluent and ETP
Flat face blinds on pumping mains, filter and clarifier pipework, sludge lines and ETP headers, where full-face gaskets and cast iron equipment are the norm. Stainless 316 or 316L is worth the extra where the line carries chlorides or acid dosing.
Ship Repair, Dry Dock and Port Work
Our shop sits in Darukhana, next to the ship repair yards, so blanking plates and blinds cut off a sample flange or an old part are routine work for us — often the same day, when the yard sends the flange across with the size marked on it.
Where we despatch blind flanges
We supply from Darukhana, Mumbai to the whole of India and export to the Gulf. Local delivery across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi, Taloja, Ambernath, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur. Regular despatch to South India — Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Hosur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Kochi and Mangaluru — and to Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Indore, Raipur, Jaipur, Delhi NCR, Kanpur, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati by the road or rail transport of your choice. Export orders for Dubai and the wider UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia move through Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mumbai Port, with seaworthy packing, marking to your PO and the invoice and packing list your freight forwarder needs.
Blind Flanges — Frequently Asked Questions
The questions our shop is actually asked when a blind flange enquiry comes in, answered plainly. If yours is not here, WhatsApp or call +91 99220 47887.
What is a blind flange?
+A blind flange is a solid disc with bolt holes on the rim and no bore, bolted to a flanged pipe end, nozzle or valve to close it completely. Because it is bolted rather than welded it can be taken off again, which is why blind flanges are used to terminate a line that may be extended later, to close a spare tee branch or vessel nozzle, and to seal a section for hydrostatic testing. I.S. Engineering Co. machines blind flanges at Darukhana, Mumbai in mild steel and stainless steel from 15mm to 600mm NB.
Which blind flange sub-types does I.S. Engineering Co. make?
+We make five blind sub-types: blind raised face (BLRF), blind flat face (BLFF), ring type joint blind (RTJ or RJ), tapped or drilled blind, and spectacle blind and spade-and-spacer line blinds. BLRF is the default where the mating flange is raised face and a ring gasket is used. BLFF suits a flat face mating flange and a full-face gasket. The RTJ blind carries a machined ring groove for a metal ring gasket. A tapped blind carries a threaded boss for a vent, drain, gauge or thermowell. Spectacle blinds and spade-and-spacer sets are cut and drilled to the same pattern as the line flange.
What is the difference between a blind flange and an end cap?
+A blind flange bolts onto an existing flanged pipe end and can be unbolted; an end cap is butt welded onto the pipe and is permanent. Specify a blind flange wherever the end has to be opened again for inspection, cleaning, pressure testing or a future extension. Specify an end cap where the end is genuinely final and you want no gasket, no bolts and nothing to maintain.
What is a spectacle blind and when is it used instead of a blind flange?
+A spectacle blind is two discs of the same drilling joined by a short web, one solid and one bored, so the fitter loosens the joint, slides the plate across and either blanks the line or opens it. It suits a joint that has to be blanked and unblanked repeatedly, and it lets an operator see at a glance whether the line is open or shut. A plain blind flange is the cheaper choice when the end will rarely be opened.
What is a spade and spacer set?
+A spade is a solid plate that goes between two flanges to block the line, and the spacer is a matching ring of the same thickness that replaces it when the line is back in service. Spade and spacer sets are used instead of a spectacle blind on large sizes, where a single joined plate would be too heavy to handle. Both are cut to the drilling of the flanges they sit between, so send us the table or class along with the size.
How thick should a blind flange be?
+For Table E work, use the thickness column in the chart on this page: our blind flanges are made to the same thickness as the corresponding flange in that table. A blind flange takes bending across its whole face, so thickness rises with both size and pressure, and higher ANSI classes are machined thicker. If you are pressure testing above the working pressure of the line, tell us the test pressure and we will confirm the thickness before cutting.
Which materials and grades do you supply blind flanges in?
+Mild steel to IS:2062 is our standard for blind flanges. In stainless steel we supply SS 304 and SS 304L, and SS 316 and SS 316L for chloride, effluent or acid service. A blind has no bore to machine, so an odd grade or an odd thickness is usually easy for us to accommodate. Mill test certificates are supplied with the material when you ask for them at the time of order.
What sizes and drilling do you cover for blind flanges?
+Blind flanges are made from 15mm NB to 600mm NB. Drilling can be Table D, E, F or H, or ANSI B16.5 class drilling, to match the flange it bolts against. The Table E drilling we hold as regular is published on this page — outside diameter, pitch circle, bolt count, hole size, bolt size and thickness for every size from 15mm to 600mm NB. Table D, F and H charts and ANSI class charts are sent on request.
Can blind flanges be used for hydrostatic pressure testing?
+Yes, blanking a section with blind flanges is the normal way to hydrotest a line. The point to watch is that the blind and its bolting have to hold the test pressure, not the working pressure, and test pressure is usually well above it. Give us the test pressure along with the size and drilling and we will confirm the thickness and the bolt size. Keep clear of a bolted blind while a line is being pressurised.
Do you supply blind flanges across India and export them?
+Yes. We despatch across India from Darukhana, Mumbai — Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur in Maharashtra, and regularly to Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Bengaluru, Hosur, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Kochi and Mangaluru in South India, as well as Ahmedabad, Delhi NCR, Kolkata and the rest of PAN India. Export orders for Dubai and the wider UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia ship through Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mumbai Port.
What do you need from me to give a rate on blind flanges?
+Four things settle a blind flange rate: the nominal bore of each size, the drilling table or ANSI class, the facing — raised, flat or RTJ — and the material grade. Add the quantity per size, and the test pressure if the blinds are for hydrotesting. Send it on WhatsApp to +91 99220 47887 or email sales.isengineeringco@gmail.com. A drawing or a sample flange is welcome if you have one.
